Avoid HP Computers — and Tech Support….

I am completed frustrated after four days of attempting to fix a problem with my HP computer. A Media Center M2478n, I purchased this unit in December 2005. In November 2007 I had problem and ended up purchasing online support for $100 — just to talk to someone (a real con-job since I later found out I could get the same level of help in online chat for nothing… live and learn….). Now, this 2 1/2 year old unit is turning into toast.
A few days ago I started having problems with the booting process, and to make a long story short, it took three days — almost entire days, mind you!! — to work this through with three different techies at HP — some on chat, one on the phone. Bottom line is that they cannot figure this out — and so they now want me to pay $261 and change (upfront!) for them to get their hands on the unit in order to “fix” the problem. The speculation is that it is a motherboard issue, but no one knows for certain. The hard drives are fine, the Windows XP and all programs operate like champs once I work around the boot problem. So-called recovery disks (two sets shipped) are useless because they do not seem to match the PC — and overall the entire experience with HP has been FUBAR. Now they want me to hand over $261 with no promise that anything will come back in working condition.

I even had one tech tell me that it is typical that after 2 1/2 years units like mine are expected to run into problems, and that I should purchase a new one. A bit of a shocker — I have certainly gotten more than 3 years out of my computers (including my original Osborne!) and never had to replace one because the motherboard went bad. I usually switched computers to step up to different OS or faster CPUs. But HP has built in obsolescence into its hardware — 2 1/2 years and the computer self-destructs!!!

Lesson learned: never, never buy an HP product, and if you must, please try, try, try to avoid dealing with their tech support. The quality of their products have deteriorated, and the support has become a profit center.

Bad show HP….
